• Objectives: This course will cover the elements of computer architecture and organization. Topics include computer arithmetic, digital logic, microprocessor architecture, memory system organization, assembly level machine architecture and programming, and interfacing and I/O organization.

• Coursework and Grading:

  There will be two hour-long exams and a two-hour final. Problems and programming exercises will be assigned regularly, and collected and graded. In addition, each student will research, write a report and give a 15 minute presentation on a topic in computer architecture not covered in class. A list of suggested topics will be provided early in the course. The final grade will be computed as follows:

  • Hourly Exams: 15% each
  • Final Exam: 25%
  • Quizzes and Assignments: 30%
  • Presentation and report: 15%

    • A: 93 - 100
    • A-: 90 - 92
    • B+: 87 - 89
    • B: 83 - 86
    • B-: 80 - 82
    • C+: 77 - 79
    • C: 73 - 76
    • C-: 70 - 72
    • D+: 67 - 69
    • D: 60 - 66
    • F: below 60

• Prerequisite:

  Successful completion of CS 122 or permission of instructor.

• Attendance:

  The student is responsible for all topics covered and work assigned in class. A makeup for one of the hourly examinations will be given only if the student provides an acceptable reason for the absence, in writing, to the instructor. In addition, please see the Attendance Policy statement in the Bulletin of Information.

• Course Strategy:

  The assignments are of great importance; these should be given the highest priority. While students are encouraged to consult with one another about the material, all work submitted should be the product of each student's individual efforts. In other words, asking another student to explain a needed concept is fine; copying from another student's assignment is not.
